Fish

• Fish will probably be the easiest animal to care for — probably. You obviously cannot take a fish out of its tank and play with it, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore it. Make sure to monitor the cleanliness of its tank or bowl, or, if your client has a filtered tank or large aquarium, that everything is running smoothly.

• There are three basic types of aquariums: saltwater, freshwater, and reef. Saltwater aquariums contain fish and other animals from ocean environments. Freshwater aquariums contain fish and plants from lakes, streams, and other freshwater sources. Reef aquariums, which may not contain any fish at all, will house other saltwater animals and plants such as coral, sea anemones, and mollusks. If you are not familiar with any of these, ask the client to provide you with detailed instructions.

• Be mindful of the portions of food or treats you feed clients’ fish. Since you’re dumping their meals directly into the water that they live and breathe in, it is easy to overdo it — which can end tragically.

• Tanks are usually equipped with a thermometer and a heater. You should check these every day to be sure the temperature remains within the client’s stated normal range. Aquariums also have a water filter, usually one that bubbles so that oxygen is mixed into the water. During each visit, you should verify that these are working properly and rinse out the filter if it is becoming blocked. If the water becomes cloudy, or the walls become heavy with green or brown algae, you must clean the tank. Owners usually have a vacuum-like tool to siphon waste from the floor of the tank and algae from the walls. Be sure you know how to use these tools beforehand, and be careful not to suck up a fish along with the dirt.

• Since fish cannot come out and greet you when you enter a client’s home, it may be easy to forget to feed them or check on them — especially if you are caring for multiple pets at the same home. It may be a good idea to set reminders on your phone or keep a checklist handy.
